My opponent played this in an otb game last night, and I was amazed when I checked later that it had been played a reasonable number of times before.

Is there a name for this?

I've never seen it before, in a couple decades of playing 1.d4

It doesn't look great, but the stats on my database for it aren't too bad, with most moves scoring between 50% and 65%; there are plenty of main lines defences where black isn't doing significantly better.

On 1.d4 c5 2.d5 f5?! white can play in gambit style - 3.e4!? fxe4 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.f3 exf3 6.Nxf3 with more than enough compensation for pawn.

I can see any good reasoning at all for 2...f5 and in the interest of fairness I tried to consider it in more than just passing interest.
