My opponent played this in an otb game last night, and I was amazed when I checked later that it had been played a reasonable number of times before.

Is there a name for this?

I've never seen it before, in a couple decades of playing 1.d4

According to shredder database this is the Old Benomi defense, though don't take that as given as i have seen it classify things wrong before (particularly when a transposition takes place...)

I'd have thought 1.d4 c5 made it the old Benoni, but I was thinking more of 2...f5, which just looks bad (and indeed was bad, in this case - an 18-move win).

Yes it doesn't look like a very good line to me. Black can't move the e-pawn because of the threat of d6! which cramps his position to high hell!! This in turn makes the c-pawn weak and black is almost forced into fianchettoing both bishops which strikes me as very slow. Do you have the pgn of your game? 🙂

Can't remember the whole game, but it went 3.e4 fe 4. Nc3 Nf6 5.Bg5 Qb6 6.Qd2 h6.

I'll get the scoresheet when I'm back at home.

It's called the Clarendon Court defense... Mestel did a video (Foxy Openings) on it years ago.

It doesn't look great, but the stats on my database for it aren't too bad, with most moves scoring between 50% and 65%; there are plenty of main lines defences where black isn't doing significantly better.

On 1.d4 c5 2.d5 f5?! white can play in gambit style - 3.e4!? fxe4 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.f3 exf3 6.Nxf3 with more than enough compensation for pawn.

I can see any good reasoning at all for 2...f5 and in the interest of fairness I tried to consider it in more than just passing interest.

The idea could be to stop 3.e4 and possible advance in kingside in future, but as I said this move cant stop 3.e4 and its white who is attacking.

I think black could have continued a while longer. He was Q for R+N, there was still a little play left in the position. Black is without question losing, but he had nothing to lose by continuing just a little further surely... 16..dxe5? shocking!! 🙄

In the final position, after say 18...Nc6 and 19.Nxg7,he's only got a piece for the queen, I think.

He had only considerered 17.Nb6+, which isn't so clear
