Greetings players and fellow patzers 🙂

Well, my sharking ends as I report on the last Minor-section tournament I may ever play.
New gradings were done very recently and my new ECF rating is 149.

This tournament was capped at 135 rating... my rating at the time was 130.

    The usual: 5 rounds, 90 mins + 30s increment.

I played this exact same tournament last year and managed 3.5pts out of 5.
I was very confident I'd do better this time, even other players were tipping me as favourite.

    No pressure then...

    --------------------------

Game 1 - John Merry (116) vs Zak Tomlinson (130)

We start with a Ruy Lopez, which I usually play with comfort but not perfect by any means.
I allowed my pawns to double towards the centre, which can be solid in many cases.

Last year in Telford, I lost in round 1... will I make amends this time?

A disappointing start for me... but I didn't feel too bad because my opponent played very well!

Game 2 - Zak Tomlinson (130) vs Jennifer Goldsmith (96)

In this game I introduce my new preparation vs the Caro Kann.
I used to play the advanced pretty much exclusively, but I'm not a fan of locked positions.
As a result, I had a run of losses with this opening.

The Panov does allow an isolated pawn, but if all your pieces develop fast then so what?
My opponent goes off-track in this game, so I give a mere taste of this opening's potential.

I'll still provide the stats, but a 10-move game should not really be considered a good sample.

Game 3 - Paul Jackson (116) vs Zak Tomlinson (130)

This is now the 4th meeting over the board with this player.
Our prior record was 1 win each with a draw.

To help prepare, I found the last game we played where I had Black and looked for improvement.
    Did it prove beneficial?

Game 4 - Zak Tomlinson (130) vs Andrew Duffell (118)

It was funny when I saw the pairing for Sunday morning.

The previous afternoon, my opponent asked me about the short round 2 game.
When I told him it was the Panov he said "Oh, I just beat someone who played that against me".

I was tempted to play something else, just to see his reaction, but decided to be principled.
This game is a better example of this opening.

Game 5 - Nigel Morris (118) vs Zak Tomlinson (130)

I've in fact played Nigel twice before, both times with Black and it was a Nimzo Indian.
He won the first game, but that was my first ever tournament game so understandable.

Then last year I played him in this same tournament in Telford, which I won.
A year later, another Nimzo... will this game also be decisive?

    ----------------------------------

So I didn't win the top prize!
With 4 points, I came joint 2nd with 4 other players and took home £90... better than nothing.

Actually the fellow who won it outright on 4.5, who took £500, was Julian Hawthorne...
...a player I beat fairly comfortably in Manchester last year!

That's just the way it goes... perhaps he might have beaten me this time, who knows.

Here's the results cross-table once again for those interested:

With a rating of 149 it seems I won't be able to play in not only Minors, but many Intermediates too.
My goal is now to start finishing among the top in Major sections.

As always, hope y'all took something out of this.
Personally, I just have fun doing the analysis... plus it helps me learn!

    Cheers all,
    Zak

Well done, it looks like you're moving up in class - of course the only problem with moving up in class is you have to work harder to stay there. 😉

    Excellent post.

In a way the first round loss gave you two miniatures in rounds 2 and 3.
I, if I could, like to take a ½ point first round bye (the Friday night game.)
I'd be fresh for Saturday and would not have to face any winners.
The real test usually came last round Sunday.

And £90..00 was as you say OK.

Well done Zak! You should be playing in Majors - it will improve your play. Look forward to more of your reports
