In fact I have read the book some 30 years ago and find it much less appealling this time around.
As in, nearly always.
The Indian/Native American adage that we can't cross the same river twice comes to mind.
One book which holds up every time (of which I wish they made a movie--- maybe have ol' George Clooney run with it) is Kindling by Nevil Shute.
Every single time: takes you right there.
