What is the idea behind them? Does it represent how recently the thread was created?

seems like the red and the grey are for that. I couldn't figure out the green ones.

I think also how busy, to some extent.

Love to hear Russ' explanation of them, though.

Testing.

Nope that didn't make any difference. I was thinking that green meant that you had contributed in the thread but that doesn't add up. I've not seen any red bubbles. Mine are all green and yellow.
Maybe green means 'GB free'?

Edit: Maybe red means more than a week since anyone posted in that thread. As for grey, green and yellow? Haven't a clue.

Russ explained them all a while back but I can't remember where, I'll have a look in the beta forum. As I recall they're indicating time since last post, and the grey ones are closed threads.

On the individual forum's page where threads are listed. They're just left of the thread title.

The Square Icon Symbols [GF] designating the various forums?

Edit: As opposed to "Coloured Speech Bubbles"?

The pastel-coloured icons to the left of each thread title in the ThreadList look vaguely like speech bubble icons, but don't have text in them. I wouldn't have called them speech bubbles though, I don't know why that shape was chosen for the icons.

I'll add a legend or update the FAQ for this soon.

Created in last day : lime green
Active in last 4 days : yellow
Open, but no new posts in last 4 days : red
Closed : gray/grey.

These do not indicate what "has been read" or "updated since last read".

Edit: They are supposed to be speech bubbles.

edit : Purple is sticky (help forum)

Whether "Speech bubbles" or 'Forum Status Bubbles' [or squares], An RHP Feature In Color I've never seen on any other forum before. It will certainly become useful (especially for members with Limited Forum Browsing Time). Thanks.

Facebook (and a few of the Popular 'Dating' Site Forums) do offer an Array of Emoticons. Dating Sites offer a few which become animated. I think their sole purpose is to provide diversion from lackluster forum content and foul language.

Among Facebook's Repertoire: Sunglasses = 8) and a Shark = (^^^) and Pink "I Love You" Heart = <3

Final Thought: On my way back to the bedroom (still bleary eyed ), I thought aloud: "Red? No, Russ, correct color for 'Open, but no new posts in last 4 days' isn't 'red'. It's Sleepy Pillow Grey". A choice of "red or lime green or yellow" would, then, indicate "Created in last day and/or Active in last 4 days." "Open, but no new posts in last 4 days": Grey.

Are there 50 shades of gray?
