Former generals want Congress to act to give children better food in schools
Rising rates of obesity among young Americans could undermine the future of the US military, two retired generals have warned.
question: should govt step in to try solve this problem?
Well, since public schools are already offering unhealthy food, the government is in fact aggravating the problem. So they should offer healthy food instead, which will also set an example for these kids that they can follow later in their life.

Its simple really, just cut out school lunches and watch the youngsters lose weight overnight. Not only that, think of all the money tax payers will save. No doubt, it is a win/win scenerio!! 😵

The National School Lunch Program was passed in 1946. So to answer your question, the government already did step in. A better question to ask is, why isn't it working?

Not enough bi-partisan support. Also the standards of health applied in 1946, took it as gospel that a diet consisting of mainly processed and prepacked foods, highly refined, high in salt, fat, and added sugar, but low in fibre with all the 'goodness' cooked out in the canning/processing, was good for you.
We know better now, but the high salt high fat high sugar highly processed food reality of many a school canteen has yet to change.

the local county has banned happy meals, but it only applies to restaurants in unincorporated areas of the county.

milk products to africa that causes dysentary and large scale death because the locals are lactose intolerant. I suppose if peace is the only objective, whether you fatten them or kill them off with inapropriate food aid, the method you choose to meet your primary objective is a moot point.

while that is a good idea I don't think it will be enough to solve this problem, considering they'll probably eat fatty foods when they get home.
