I went to significantly "worse" schools (both college and law school) than I could have because of cost. I basically paid my own way through both with government loans but between college and law school, I racked up debt of only a bit more than $15,000. How, you ask? I took advantage of AP and other credit transfer and went to a state school for undergrad and went to the law school that offered me the biggest scholarship.

Now, it turns out that I'm thrilled with my decision as I have a job I love and the schools I went to scarcely matter at this point, but, oh Mr. President, what kind of taxpayer subsidized relief do I get for being fiscally responsible?

Oh, and what if I continue to pay my mortgage bills as they come due and what if I'm not underwater because I bargain hunted when I looked for a house? What do I get then, Mr. President?

You also had a much better economy to graduate into.

People like yourself are far greater victims than those who spent irresponsibly and purchased homes they never could afford.

There you have it. The President is only interested in helping the irresponsible and treating everyone like they are the incompetent people he wants to help.

He wants to wipe out the Middle Class and only have the lower class. It increases his base.

Since when was helping the poor equivalent to punishing the rich?

Yes, "Quantitative Easing" ought to be restricted to the very wealthy and corporations who absorb the huge cash injections without social benefit. The idea of putting it into the pockets of people who are struggling is all wrong, because it is all their own fault for being suckered. Of course, it would enable them not only to survive the worst recession with some dignity but also result in their spending more, helping to restore the economy as they do, but that must not outweigh the moral imperative that they must suffer.

Balance the budget and take us back to the Thirties - you know it's the moral way to go. Bring back prohibition while you are at it - that will help to overshadow the war on drugs. In fact, let's just start another war.

Or those who have so far avoided the worst effects of the recession might consider that, if nothing happens to restore the economy then their fragile security - hard earned of course - will go the same way as the less fortunate who have already lost secure jobs they loved etc. If the economy continues to dive, then who benefits?

QE?

How about giving everyone an equal share of the pie? Just cut everyone who pays taxes in the US the same check? Quit picking and choosing who you will help.

How did they get poor? Did they take out loans that they can't pay? Did they choose to go into debt?

Why help only those who make poor choices?

Interesting bit of maths here. Take a sum of money and a) give an equal bit to everyone or b) give it primarily to people most likely to make a difference. For any given sum, which would work best? It is at least worth debating. In any case, giving it all to the banks and wealthy is demonstrably not going to help anyone. They strengthen their balance sheets and wait out the recession before being willing to re-invest and for good reasons.

So, some people will pay 10% of their income to student loans rather than 15% two years earlier than under prior regulations.

More will be able to get a consolidation of loans and pay perhaps a half point of interest less.

This screws you how again?

Because people who make good choices rarely, if ever, need help.

You don't do an intervention for someone who isn't a drug addict, do you?

It's about enabling.

It just doesn't help, no matter how good the intention.

Should we get rid of bankruptcies too?
