I heard on the news today that Obama is thinking of using the nation's oil reserves to offset the rising cost of gas at the pumps. Isn't he the same man who advocates cap and trade which would do the same? I thought that rising fuel prices would reduce its use and force us to find or desire alternatives. Therefore, the higher fuel becomes the better.

What am I missing here?

He is emulating your hero, Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately.

ronald reagan was both a gentleman and a kind man.

barack obama is also a gentleman and a kind man.

both were or are politicians.

the difference is that obama is first a politician and then a president...

..ronald reagan was first a president and then a politician.

Ah, so while he was governor of California, he wasn't a politician? I think you could have said "first a governor and then a politician" but by the time he got to D.C. he knew very well how the game was played.

So no one has any answers? The only answer I can come up with is that Obama wants higher energy prices, but only after the 2012 election.

Naturally, you don't get it. You continually rave and rant that a cap and trade system is some socialist scheme to destroy the American economy. Since you start in such a position of abysmal ignorance, it's no wonder why the workings of the actual world are such a mystery to you.

You are missing what the rest of the world figured out ages ago. Tax the fuel! That results in smaller more efficient cars, lower usage overall, more tax for the government, and lower government debt.

As for Obama's plan, I assume it can only work in the short term, so either it is a political stunt for the next election (one of the failings of democracy), or he believes the price will come down again after the troubles in the middle east.

I don't know much about cap and trade (except that you hate it because you think you will have to pay more), but I thought it was focused on power generation and coal not oil.

It's politics. Obama probably knows that it would be good for the US economy to put a significant tax on petrol, but he also knows that this would cost him votes.

Obama couldn't know that taxing hell out of gasoline is good for the economy because...

...it isn't.

By Obama's own admission the US needed to Bush tax cuts because the economy would be harmed if he did not extend them. Of course, KN would disagree with that, however, I think Obama believes it as most do in Congress who voted to extend the Bush tax cuts. So to be consistent, Obama has taken the same approach to fuel prices.

It would seem that Obama is worried about the cost of gas in terms of the ill effects it has on the economy. If so, should they include a clause in cap and trade that says something to the effect that if the country goes through similar economic hard times as it is now that it should be suspended?

No, he is worried about the ill effects on voters. I don't rate Obama's competence very highly as I'm sure you are aware, but I don't think he is dumb enough to really believe that gas guzzlers are good for the US economy on the long term.

When he does something besides have one of his cronies talk about the possibility of releasing some of the Strategic Reserve, let me know.

You really don't have a clue about the purposes of cap and tax or the carbon tax or the realities of the energy market. Suffice to say, recent events make a mockery of the claim that either would cause some enormous raise in energy prices; enormous raises in energy prices are inevitable IF something isn't done in the long term to restrain consumption.

He isn't; he had the EPA increase fuel efficiency standards last year. http://www.edf.org/pressrelease.cfm?contentID=10954
