you know, "partner" was originally what gay people called their significant other. Why did hetro's get confused and replace girlfriend or wife with this gay term?

Everything is so black and white with you. You need to go and get a massage with a happy ending or something...

Originally partner was a term to describe anyone in a partnership, some people don't bother about segregative sexual terminology. She's more than a girlfriend and we're not married, so it's an appropriate term.

Joy Division, 'Atmosphere'
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, 'Sad Waters'
Tom Waits, 'Innocent When You Dream'
Leonard Cohen, 'It Seems So Long Ago, Nancy' (if that's the correct title)
Johnny Cash, 'I See A Darkness' (original version is also sad)
The Gun Club, 'Breaking Hands'
Marianne Faithfull, 'Les Prisons du Roy' (live)
Billie Holliday, 'Strange Fruit'
Current '93, 'The Bloodbells Chime'
SWANS, 'Mother, My Body Disgusts Me'
Angels of Light, ' 'The Kid is Already Breaking', 'Song for My Father',

and 'Blind' is pretty sad too:
