Waiting for the Christmas Number 1 was also hotly anticipated in days before Britain's Got the Pop Factor etc. meant that this would automatically line Simon Cowell's pockets.

Many people would rate this the greatest Christmas song of all time:

Ironically, this never made it to No1, and must be high on the list of greatest songs to reach No 2.

I wonder how many people watching this when it was released, and asked which of the two lead singers would barely make it into their 40s, and which would still be alive today, would have picked the right answer. In fact, Shane MacGowan will turn 57 on Christmas Day.

A reminder of the unpredictably of life.

Not sure what song it's meant to be, but I think you've inserted the wrong link.

Enjoying your advent series—a really nice idea!

Hell, no. It's this one:

And I think the one you meant is

which is a good second. But when all is said and done, I am, despite everything, still not cynical enough to prefer it over the first. I mean, despite believing more in the reality of the second, I do wish everybody a merry Christmas.

Yes, you worked it out from my comments!

The song you posted is the highest grossing royalties record each Christmas. Apparently, Slade rake in more than £500,000 every year from this one song. Which must take their total annual royalities to about £501,000.
