Bill Simons in his book of basketball puts Russell and the top center and Kareem as second and Wilt as third. That rings true to me.

If these sort of lists or ranking of players interests you, I'd highly recommend his book (an extra plus to the book is the fact that he's a great writer and very funny)

Thanks for the indication.

Drexler played both SF and SG, didn't he?

The center position is the tuffest one to rank, I guess. All those five are great. Considering numbers, you gotta pick Russell or Wilt as number one. But The sickest one I've seen is Hakeem. And I believe he would destroy Kareem with his athleticism and post moves.

Kareem was a six time MVP, a 19 time all star with six championships. He is first in career points, If you like advanced metrics he led the league in PER nine times and was first or second in each of his first twelve years. He also was first career in offensive win shares and second career in defensive win sharres. I don't think people should judge him by the end of his career. Hakeem may be truly great, but did you ever think he was better than Jordan? Kareem was clearly the best player of 70s.

It was the last time someone thought Hakeem was better.

the problem with these lists are that they seem to be focused on who were the best offensive and-or rebounding players in the NBA. But defense is as important as offense -- so who were the best defensive players of all time? Is there a good way of figuring this out statistically?

Much can be said for Kareem's sky-hook -- but who was the best at stopping the sky-hook? Who was the best at stopping Jordan, Bird, Magic or Shaq? (or at least minimizing their damages).

the one exception is Bill Russell -- probably remembered more for his defense than his offense -- with much of his fame coming from clearly being the best at stopping Wilt.

Don't want to look like underrating Kareem. He sure was great and he's stats are amazing. I was considering Bill Russell titles and Wilt crazy averages when I mentioned numbers. But if you look at career stats, then Kareem is the best. Still, I think Olajuwon (at his prime) is better than Kareem (at his prime). And Olajuwon, despite he's amazing offensive package, is one of the best defenders ever (lead the league in blocks). And, please, MJ is the best ever. Nobody here disconsidered that.

Interesting, nobody mentioned KG for PF. I was between him and Dirk. I'm not really sure of who's better.

MJ couldn't hold the Big O's jock and is the most overrated player there ever was.
