You may enjoy this recent comment from a good friend and NFL Fan: "One more week and we lace up the cleats for real."
I printed out the regular-season schedule for this year. It was only 13 pages from NFL.com Stupid though I was hoping for 17 pages.

Then I went down each week of just picking who I think would win each game.

The AFC picks were exceedingly difficult to make... based on the Offseason and preseason these 5 teams could all flip flop places and I would still be as content as I could be with my picks. In the west the chargers could unseat the Broncos and I wouldn't be completely surprised, in the North the Ravens will almost certainly win the Division IMO and may be a powerhouse once again this season. The Pats are an easy pick to win the east. The south? The AFC south is really up for grabs and that is without hinting that the Colts are not a good team but any team in the division could be great if things pan out. Take the Texans, with just above average Qb play and the defense playing as dominant as they seem on paper this team could easily win 12 games, or how about the Titans? If Locker stays healthy and proves to be the playmaker he was drafted to be then they could win 10 or 11 games IMO and the Jags, if they Start Bortles and everything goes right they can finish in contention for at least a wild card spot. Most intriguing division in the NFL.

Who doesn't?

I use the offseason and preseason to judge if a team has addressed the issues they faced in the prior season and if they retained their strengths.

In the offseason we see which players and coaches end up where and then during the preseason we get to evaluate the players on the field. We don't really get to evaluate the coaches but most coaches are established and we have an idea of their scheme and know if it has been successful or if it fits with the personnel they are given.

What do you do then? pick solely on last seasons performance?

BTW I don't judge a team based on record in the preseason. a team can go 0-4 but if the players they added in the offseason are looking good and they fill in the holes they had and that team was say 8-8 but a year before they were 12-4 then I can reasonably expect them to be a playoff team.

No problem.

It isn't an exact science, and like I said I already know the general strength of each team, the offseason and preseason just gives us a hint if the team gained or lost strength because in todays NFL the difference between winning the Super Bowl and winning the first pick in the draft is a lot narrower than any other sport.
