"Merely" meaning in addition to? In Jesus' day, the Bible as they possessed it, was considered the word of God. Jesus and others were still receiving words from God, which necessarily had to agree with what they already possessed in order to be received as such.

No offense, but given your opinion on other matters spiritual and/or specifically related to Jesus' teachings, I'll stick with my perspective on the matter.
