    Gnosticism does not seem to have had much connection with the council of Nicaea. The likes of Marcion and his expurgated version of Luke had been dismissed much earlier.

    Yes, there was a split in Christianity - several. There was firstly the schisms between the Roman Church and the Orthodox churches, then more prominently, the split of the protestants from the Catholic Church. But the Catholic Church can easily trace itself back to the early centuries of Christianity.
