In the thread 'If OSAS is in the Bible', I said "Many are saved. Not all the saved get eternal life.". JS357 asked "What are they saved from?"
I had answered this question before in other threads. Here is Pauls answer to that.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:1-9 KJV)
Paul concludes that the Christian Saints at the church of Ephesus are saved by grace through faith. It is not of works it is the gift of God.
There are some Christians who after reading this shout out "Hallelujah .. Praise the Lord. We have eternal life." But they ignore what Paul said earlier about what they were saved from and how it is that they can get eternal life which Paul said in Ephesians 4 and 5.
Eternal life in the Kingdom of God and Saved are two different things.
Paul said they are saved from
- a life of sin and death
- living according to his world
- living under the influence of Satan
God has now brought them out of this life of sin and death and quickened them to live a life in Christ. God has done that because God is rich in mercy and full of kindness toward them. They are saved from this life of sin through grace. Now by the death of Christ there is an opportunity for eternal life which is only given to them in ages to come as Paul stated.
According to Paul, eternal life only comes if these Christian Saints continue with this new life in Christ and follow the commandments and avoid sin. Then will he inherit the Kingdom of God and be granted eternal life as Paul explained in Ephesians 4 and 5. Failure means no inheritance in the Kingdom of God.
