I do not slaughter animals to eat. Someone else does it. I just buy
the meat to eat it. Will I still be unable to advance on the spiritual
path in that case?

Buy paying money for it you perpetuate whatever practices the slaughterers use.
The best way to eat meat is to kill and prepare it yourself.
If you must buy it, try to suppport abbotoirs that employ humane killing practices with their animals.

US government authority and laws to prevent inhumane and cruel
treatment to animals. The slaughtering and meat are inspected by
government workers trained in such things.

than the one that does the killing? Will I wind up in a better position or
worse position than I am now?

If one kills ones meat and cooks it then they will absorb the karma. They are connected to the animal, the earth and humane practices they employ to kill the animal.
This is a matter of priorities here that I'm talking about. I believe a human should be able to kill an animal to survive.

67 and not getting any younger, I was wondering what determines the kind
of body and life I will return to?

You are not going anywhere.....near Nirvana.
Killing will ban you from going anywhere near God or nirvana.
Killing will simply have you return to this world of suffering over and over and over again.
