Could the 'powers that be' link up the games to a database of openings, so players could view their records of games played with particular openings? It would also be a good learning tool if the opening was smartly displayed on the game board screens.

You can already "explore" your games and get the infor directly.
It is the database of your moves with win/draw/lose ratios.

Yes, you can, but you can't, for example, sort My Games by opening or see at-a-glance pie charts of your records with different openings. Nor does the name of the opening appear in the games you are currently playing.
