I totally agree regarding the STG. I have been raging against it for a year. I've given up. The simple fact is that it's sticky. Go figure!

A few years back there was a big kerfuffle from the Admins about those type of threads being classed as spam so they were all closed (I think the first Word Association Game was closed for that reason).

    Nice to see standards slipping!

I'm not bothered by them and they are the two threads nearly always ignore, however I peeped in the other day and was perplexed at why people bother. Well I’m perplexed at why some of the posters bother...there were or course the usual suspects who habituate these perennial thread disasters and no one would be at all surprised to see them peppering the already wafer thin film of sanity with the Gatling gun metaphor of forum retardation.

It's irony, a form of humor, a mindless form of trying to be clever while non substantive. The closest analogy in American culture would have to be the Seinfeld show.

Ok...so you are interested in the motivation of "some" people to post in those threads. And it seemed like a good idea to you to make a Site Idea about removing the threads and accuse a group of posters, who post side by side with your group of "some" people, of "forum retardation"?

If you honestly want to know, sometimes calm approach with a kind question works better. Another idea would be to create a thread in the General Forum like "Why (/WHY) post in the WA and STG game thread?".

However, if you were (just slightly) irritated by these threads, then running over to the Site Ideas and propose removal of the threads was probably the best thing to do๐Ÿ˜‰

I already demanded that the mods get rid of the STG thread. ๐Ÿ˜›

Yup it is still there! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The original WAG was closed because of its length (together with a whole bunch of other long threads), not because it was classed as spam. A replacement thread was created right away if I recall correctly; if it had been classed as spam, I am sure that wouldn't have been allowed to stay.*

I have found the WAG quite enjoyable at times. I don't expect everybody else to find it enjoyable, and I do expect that some people will see me as shallow, stupid, insane or whatever for enjoying it. That's fine. But there are clearly several people who enjoy it (and the STG, which I personally couldn't care less about), and the GF isn't flooded with threads like this, so I don't see the problem. If we'd get rid of every thread that some people don't enjoy and that are kept active by posters that some people consider to be shallow, stupid or insane, we'd be left with nothing.

Now that I think about it, that would be kind of fun.

*Edit: In fact, people were told to create a new one when it was closed: http://www.timeforchess.com/board/showthread.php?threadid=16193&page=3393
