    They look terrible. Not one of them works.

    1. gxf8 (promote to queen) I don't think blacks move matters

    If black does 1. ...d1=Q

    Then
    2. Qe7+ Kd5
    3. Qe5#

    If black does 1. ...Kd5

    Then
    2. Qd2+ Ke6
    3. Qe7#

    Everything else for black is even worse, but it does prolong the game by a turn, or two.

    I think those work.

    Edit: Shame on black for even getting in this stupid position.

    No, if 1.gxf8=Q then axb5+ spoils everything.

    Don't forget that these are constructed puzzles, not necessarily preceded by a meaningful game. As long as the position COULD be obtained by legal moves.

    I like

    1 gxf8(N)+

    I make it the black king has 2 options, Kd6 or Kd5, either of which is countered by

    2 Qxd2+

    still trying to work them all out...

    so:

    1. gxf8(N)+ Kd6
    2. Qxd2+ Kc5
    3. Qd4++

    1. gxf8(N)+ Kd6
    2. Qxd2+ Kxc7
    3. Qd7+ Kb6
    4. Qxc6++

    1. gxf8(N)+ Kd5
    2. Qxd2+ (Kc5 has the same result as above)
    2. ... Ke4
    3. Bxf6++

    I think that is it.
    Good effort, but no ...

    1.gxf=N+? Kd6
    2.Qxd2+ Kxc7
    3.Qd7+ Kb6
    4.Qxc6+ Kxa7

    ps. read the thread again.

    Yeah sorry - I edited it as I got in the same a thing.

    I'mtrying with an early idea which was Na6+ after Kxc7... but the only chess set I have at home is a minoan style one, and that's more confusing than doing it in my head!

    2. gxf8Q Qb4+ (delaying checkmate)

    Read the thread again. After 1.Bxc6, it was already shown how white wins after d1=Q and d1=R, but not (yet?) after d1=B or d1=N

    If black responds with d1B
    1. Bxc6 d1B
    2. gxf8R Kd6 (black's only legal move)
    3. Qd2+ Kxc7
    4. Qd8#
    There are others move for both black and white instead of 3. Kxc7 4.Qd8#
    But all are checkmate in one move.

    If black responds with d1N
    1. Bxc6 d1N
    2. gxf8Q Nxb2+ (other moves available for black but making little difference)
    3. Qxb2 c1Q (piece promotion is black's only legal move)

    3. Bxc6

    King cannot retreat to any square bar d8, black can play any move, and Ne6 should finish him off.

    Please say that is it!

    No:

    1.gxf8=N+? Kd6
    2.c8=N+ Rxc8!

    edit. you all should go back to fetof's proposal and my reply about the two other minor promotions on d1.

    edit2. fetof's proposal was a follow on on Xanthos's first mobe 1.Bxc6.

    If black responds to Bxc6 with d1Q
    1. Bxc6 d1B
    2. gxf8B (this avoids stalemate problem with queen)
    Qd4+ (delays checkmate)
    3. exd4 Kxf6 (black's only legal move)
    4. d5#
