Then
2. Qe7+ Kd5

If black does 1. ...Kd5

Everything else for black is even worse, but it does prolong the game by a turn, or two.

I think those work.

No, if 1.gxf8=Q then axb5+ spoils everything.

Don't forget that these are constructed puzzles, not necessarily preceded by a meaningful game. As long as the position COULD be obtained by legal moves.

Yeah sorry - I edited it as I got in the same a thing.

I'mtrying with an early idea which was Na6+ after Kxc7... but the only chess set I have at home is a minoan style one, and that's more confusing than doing it in my head!

Read the thread again. After 1.Bxc6, it was already shown how white wins after d1=Q and d1=R, but not (yet?) after d1=B or d1=N

There are others move for both black and white instead of 3. Kxc7 4.Qd8#
But all are checkmate in one move.

4. c8Q#

King cannot retreat to any square bar d8, black can play any move, and Ne6 should finish him off.
