I will be coming up against a friend of mine in a tournament soon, by the looks of it. He is better than me and I am looking for an opening (preferably not the Grob) to surprise him with. I have won a piece for two pawns in the QGD but he achieved a much better position and eventually recouped the piece.
Any suggestions?
🙂
Thanks.

Larsen (1.b3) as white and Albin (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5) as black
I never believed in surprise weapons. What you should do is study something very deeply that you know he'll play, and then just beat up on him. Get an edge, and then prosecute that edge. 😀 Good luck regardless of what you choose. The opening doesn't matter all that much anyway.
1. c4 is my fav...but if u need different...you can play 1.d3 and leaves 2.Nd2 (mieses) open... ends up with a marcozy type attack (maroczy used against mieses)... its positional, however pretty damn sound, especially as its not very well known

for sure, this can produce some of the funnest chess games 😀
black loses both central pawns in 2 moves.. is it worth it? i say "no" 🙂
i (who plays worse live) went toe to toe with a 1900 who thought he could just blitz me off the board.. i lost on time in probably over a 50 move game, queens were still on the board = intense 🙂

my thoughts exactly! before it began i was saying "i bet 1 guy falls for it, how embarassing it will be" but then 2 alone in my group, and many others 😕 maybe lower level players should only get to play in themed tournaments that start with 1.e4 e5 2.Qf3!!!!!!!! 😉
btw, i thought this game is interesting(and the kind that makes chess fun), it tempting to use the froms when i see my bird at the other end.. but i think ive found more annoying things from my white losses that black does..

I believe in surprise weapons - they works, especially in OTB games. But you should study these "surprise weapons" very well and use only sometimes - and they should bring you many points against unprepared opponents.
