Very generally, I think Black has a very good version of Alekhine's defense. I used to play the Dragon, but got tired of facing the Alapin (2. c3), and I started looking at Alekhine's Defense to get some ideas about following up with 2. ... Nf6.

Once I studied it, I liked Alekhine's so much that I switched to it.

In any event, Black often plays the thematic ...c5 break in the Alekhine, whereas a pawn on c3 is not the most testing way of meeting it.

Perhaps if I viewed this as a "Caro Kann vs the English with colors reversed" I would have a different opinion?

Excuse me just for a moment.

    After 1. e4 c5 2. c3

You put the pawn back on c2, tell White to stop fannying about.
Put the g1 Knight on f3 and play 2...d6.

Or you could go to and look at Korch's games. He earned his living playing this 3.c3 stuff.

    OK back to your....er.....fun.

This is why I will always stay a newbie

Good that I'll never have to play this from the White side

Looks simple enough from Black's perspective, will try it and report back

good point. makes me wonder if Bf5 is any good after any tempo-move like h3? trying to land something on e3 just to be nasty before white gets d4 in.

    1. e4 c5 2. c3 d6 3. Nf3 Nf6 and then comes the point of the earlier poster's d6 move as after 4. e5 black simply retreats with Nfd7. Obviously, there are a bunch ov variations, and there are a bunch of threads on this one Sicilian Variation.
