A brief review of the few pages I have read so far of a murder mystery set
around a chess tournament; ‘The Sponsor’ by Fred Das & Jeroen Terlingen.
The tournament is Wijk ann Zee the principle players are made up names.
Not sure if they are inspired by real players. I’m not too happy so far as
I can see the settings for mushy lovey - dovey scenes already developing.
Puzzles and a then look at Stalemates. Did you know there are just under 1,000
instant stalemates on RHP from players needlessly promoting to a Queen.
I show some OTB games where players are taking Bishops and ‘thankfully
and gratefully’ I found a very few where alert RHP players have done the same.

@greenpawn34 saidWith the exception of The Queens Gambit, I've read very few stories with a chess theme that were truly interesting. In addition, chess players in America are typically portrayed as either introverted bohemians, or nerdish, socially awkward young males with bad skin who can't get a date with a girl on a Saturday night.

@mchill
I read the Queens Gambit in the mid 80's it was OK.
I've not see the Netflix version. I suppose to keep a
story ticking over for a non-player they have to have
some romance but it can take over the story.
I like Sci-fi but all too often these days it is a love story set
in a space ship . Not Mills and Boon but Mills and Moon.
For a good chess story, and you could not make it up.
Ray Keene's book on the 1978 Karpov - Korchnoi match,
and you also get the great games.
@greenpawn34 saidI saw something on TV many years ago about Karpov and Korchnoi

Maybe the master game series.
Korchnoi didn't like Karpov much but I think it was mote political than chess related
That is correct @tvochess, corrected.
I see you PM'd me first, I do not log on everyday
so often fall behind my PM's. Thanks again.
@greenpawn34
Hi GP,
I don't think I PM'd you. Not sure how that came about.
This case, I was proud to have found a working solution, so needed a confirmation for my ego 😀
Thanks!

You might enjoy The Queen's Gambit netflix show. It is focussed on the main character and her issues with addiction, but there is a lot of chess and it isn't the usual stupid stuff where a GM is surprised by a mate in 1. The games were composed by Gary Kasparov.
I keep pausing at different bits, trying to get as much of the games as possible. I wonder if someone has posted the full games somewhere?
@Wyn-Davies
I do not have Netflix or any other sub-channel, Sky, Prime etc.... nor do I intend
getting one. I might give 'Queen's Gambit' a watch if I see it on a DVD in a 2nd
hand shop.
The Games:
The December 2020 CHESS has an article by John Henderson who has tracked down
the games used in the Netflix series. You can get a pdf copy for as little as £1.25.

(there is also an article in that mag by me and my bucket list - so value for money !)
