You have learned a harsh lesson. You will not make this mistake again. Stalemate is where your opponent cannot make a legal move. It can be avoided by the superior attacking force by making sure, if you cannot deliver checkmate, you leave the enemy king a flight square.
Stalemate is not checkmate, so it is not a victory within the laws of the game. Unlike a real battle, creating the perfect seige is NOT a good thing in chess ๐
