Buddies List

I'm sure it is obvious, but I cannot seem to have any success in adding a friend to my list. How does one do this?
I did go through the FAQ and tried all sorts of possibilities (even positions!) but no luck.

Click on their username and you will be taken to their profile page.
On the left side you will see the option to "Add Buddy".
Click that and they will be added to your Buddy list.
