i used to work as a waiter at a lunch place where bobby fischer used to dine when he lived above the fire station in reykajavik.
i was his chess "sparring partner". he paid me well to keep my
rating low so that i would not be "known" among the chess
cognoscente, hence, i timed out periodically to keep up the
lie.

"I will tell you the truth," whispered Mister Moggy, his eyes glistening yellow in the glare of twilight. "I once worked as a waiter where Bobby Fischer used to dine,...when he lived above the fire station in Reykjavik."
Ponderable viewed him suspiciously through his monocle. That didn't sound very much like the truth. "Above a fire station?"
"Yes!" snapped Mister Moggy, detecting the suspicion in his voice. "And being highly superstitious he would always descend via the fireman's pole, never down the 13 stairs."
Ponderable decided to humour the fellow. "Interesting."
"I was his phantom "sparring partner" he continued, "and he paid me well to keep my chess rating low so that I would not be "known" among the chess cognoscente. Hence I timed out periodically to keep up the lie."
"Interesting," repeated Ponderable.
"Of course, when he no longer had need of me he transformed me into a cat,.. had me neutered."
