So there is this crow, we are friends, he comes around cawing for attention, but today it sounds like he has laryngitis, sounds more like he is gagging than his usual 'CAW, CAW, CAW'

Maybe I should take him to the vet.

No need to do that. If he is indeed a friend, all you need do is go behind him and give him the Heimlich Maneuver...problem solved.
