Do you think it's better than the 1939 version? An interesting question - what remakes are better than their originals? I vote for the 1954 version of A Star is Born with Judy Garland and James Mason - a considerable improvement on the 1937 version with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The third, 1976 version, however, is terrible.
In general it is good old films that are re-made for a contemporary audience
and inevitably end up failing. A conspicuous exception to this are Mutiny on
the Bounty (1935), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Bounty (1984) all of
which were creditable films.

Here's an interesting list of 50 remakes. So many of what I took to be originals turn out to have been remakes!
Though even Empire (with its shameless bias towards films of the past thirty or forty years) is forced to admit that a lot of those remakes, even if creditable, aren't in fact as good as their originals.
His Girl Friday (a considerable improvement on The Front Page) is one I should have remembered, though.

I don't read Empire, tending to see it as a comic book nerd publication, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and brevity of the writing in the mini-pieces in that that list. And these magazines do often do visuals impressively well.
