Modern tennis - some questions

1. towel ritual at the service line
Who invented that show with boys and girls fetching towels to the players after almost each point?
It must have been that someone accidentally forgot to leave his (her?) towel at the chair and then all others picked the fashion up.

2.Applauding after each point
In an average match there must be zillion of points.
How come the hands don't fall off after a long match?

3. Farting in the audience
If someone in the audience, in the closest seats farts, is it regarded as disturbing of player(s)?

Vandervelde -Perhaps I can help you with some of these:

1. Towels - I used to play tennis a lot and can assure you, players hands sweat a lot during points, even the short one's. Drying off one's hands and racket grips helps a lot.

2. Applauding after each point - This is simply a sign of respect due to world class players who've dedicated thousands of hours of work to play at the world class level. Much like the silence due to world class chess players during a tournament.

3. Farting in the audience - Completely over emphasized. This only happens on rare occasions, and I'm sure you know this.

Like Chess...Tennis is an elegant game that is easy to play, but very difficult to play well. I hope this clears things up. 🙂
