Also, I am puzzled by how the Commonwealth idea goes down
among the regular people in the streets of the former colonies.
We actually quite like it. We get to participate in things like the Commonwealth Games and CHOGM, and it gives us some connection to Europe. Being this far away from everybody else sometimes feels a bit isolated.
Of course, we don't "live under the English thumb", these days it's America and China that oppress us, but we kid ourselves we're independent. We can laugh at the British royals because we don't have to finance them, and an occasional visit keeps our Brit-focused oldies happy, but most of us are either republican or anarchic.
