For a brief 3 year period in the late 60's, they had a one hour comedy/variety show that everybody had to watch and talk about the next day, and they were so big that it was unimaginable that they would fail, but they went a bit too far left wing anti-establishment for prime time and got crushed by the studio and system, never to arise again. They owned Hollywood from 67 to 69, but the powers that be made them all but disappear. Anybody remember them?

You bet I watched them. Very original but like the Weavers, and Pete Seeger, they got blacklisted. So much for freedom of speech.
I remember the show being live. I remember Joan Baez performing on the show and after the song explaining why her husband, David Harris, was in prison. The screen suddenly went salt-and-pepper. End of transmission. No one called it censorship.

"The Smothers Brothers are Thomas and Richard, American singers, musicians, and comedians. The brothers' trademark double act was performing folk songs, which usually led to arguments between the siblings". Wikipedia (Active from:1958 until 2010)
Yes, I also remember them well. One of these brothers still appears in advertisements on television.
