Why is Toronto's NHL hockey team the Maple Leafs? The plural of 'leaf', is 'leaves'- not 'leafs'. Although they are a team (more than one), the nickname doesn't have to be plural. The Toronto Maple Leaf would be OK, like the Colorado Avalanche.

Why are they called the Maple Leafs?
There have been numerous reasons cited for Smythe's decision to rename the team. The Maple Leafs say that the name was chosen in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment from World War I. Another story says that Smythe named the team after a team he'd once scouted, called the East Toronto Maple Leafs.

Why is Toronto's NHL hockey team the Maple Leafs?

Interesting question, frankly I never noticed that before. You might wish to contact the team business office, perhaps they know.

What I know about The Toronto Maple Leafs is they used to be my favorite hockey team. All that changed one day in the early 80's when I watched as the New York Rangers scored 2 short handed goals with 6 min. to go in the 3rd period to win 3-2 over The Maple Leafs. After that, I decided The Maple Leafs were just a bunch of sissies, and their team mascot should be a sheep, with "Born To Lose" tattooed on their foreheads !

Do you even recognize any of these names? #2 in their division right now. They will make the playoffs this Season!!! It has been 52 years since a stanley cup next year. The New York Rangers went 50 years between cups. Montreal Canadians haven't won a cup since 1993! They use to be a power house back in the 50's 60's & 70's, with 24 Stanley cups to their credit but haven't done much in the past 25 years!!!

Montreal has 23 cups not 24...I think.
Toronto wins next year and I'm going to Toronto to celebrate when they have the parade.

It's true, I don't recognize these names, nor do I follow hockey very closely anymore, and I suspect Toronto is an improved team. A half century since the last Stanley cup however is not much to brag about.

Trust me it has been 24 cups 1916, 1924, 1930, 1931, 1944, 1946, 1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986, & 1993. The Maple Leafs last won a cup in 1967!!!! Yes they are way over due. Montreal did really good in the 50's, 60's, & 70's...Their last cup was in 1993 as you can see above. I was fortunate to see Montreal win many cups, at one time Hockey players didn't wear helmets and Goalies didn't wear masks!!! True!!!

Yes, they should certainly make the playoffs this year. I have seen many of the players who are on the team now play, some of them in Junior hockey could tell then they were on their way to the NHL at that time !!!
