It looks like this paper makes their enzymes in bacteria, but then uses them to synthesize HMG-CoA. It's a neat method in which they can tweak the reaction conditions in subtle ways to favor production of unique metabolites. Certainly, there is broad applicability as well as fundamental knowledge to be learned.
