The answer needed to encompass past and future as well as now.

The reasoning here seems to be that the term "the present" can include elements of past and future.

Can you come up with a sentence that includes "the present" where that term can't be replaced with "now"?

Aha, but here you're using present as an adjective instead of a noun (e.g., the present, the answer to the puzzle).

Your sentence could be rephrased to say: "The U.S. president now in office is attracting the world's attention."

Your "The present..." refers to a different noun. Not the same as "the present" offered as the puzzle solution.

I'd say not exactly the same meaning as
    "We live in the present"

But I'll offer you a draw.
