    That could well be. But my guess is that the US media consulted whom they regarded as official sources for chess matters and had no reason to think that Ashley's being the first black grandmaster was controversial or questionable.

    If your broader concern is that the US mainstream media's reporting is often one-sided, I would agree. I'm just not sure they are culpable in this instance.
