I have recently been running my games through my phone's program and I notice that neither my opponent nor myself pick up points when we move. If I move all I can do is lose points. At best I can hold my points and my opponent then gets an opportunity to lose points.

The program is nice because it gives its suggestion after pointing out a serious mistake.

This reinforces in my mind the idea that we never win a chess game, the other guy just loses.

JMHO - I'd be careful about reading too much into the results of your phone's program. Computer programs, like chess books are a guide, not a gospel; also, if I may suggest, when our opponent resigns or is checkmated, we do very much win a chess game.

Becoming a stronger player isn't easy, if it were, we'd all be G.M.'s. Don't be so hard on yourself. 🙂

Yeah I notice stronger players avoid all little traps I hope they fall for. One guy said I could not do that because my trap would result. Then I get constricted and screw up.

Yet there was always an answer to what he did, I just failed to find it.

One other pattern is to solid up your position after getting a significant material advantage causes some people to resign.

I suffer from giving up too soon. But I do not find enjoyment in defending what I believe to be a losing position.
