    They sometimes played 3-D chess in some of the TV Star Trek episodes, but that probably does not count.

    Does anyone in real life even play that? I looked it up once but it made my head hurt just trying to figure it out. I have enough trouble just trying to play regular chess!

    The OP indicates a "List of Films With Chess Scenes".
    The adding of the post-2017 parameter is excessively limiting and nonsensical.

    Upon reading this thread's title; Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957) immediately came to mind.

    Have to say, Wolfe's post puzzled me too.

    Surely Max Von Sydow playing chess vs Death is THE iconic chess scene in a film.
