@patzeringsaid I think Morphy was against prize money in chess if I'm not mistaken 🤔
He would. He was a lawyer who quit chess when his opponents started to find the way to beat him. He didn't need a cent from chess, and didn't have a lot of love for other players.
Thinks bits of that are correct. Certainly an enigma to chess but he
got on with most players it was only in the last few years of his life
he refused to talk about chess.
When he beat Lowenthal in a match http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=79504
Lowenthal paid him £100.00 - Morphy then bought him £120.00 worth of furniture
for Lowenthal's family who just moved to a new apartment.
Well, yes. But presumably not from being bad at it, but rather from his celebrity as a chess player who was going mad. People would not have him as their lawyer.
I read the title of the thread again today and thought "My old friend Bob Kramer used to carry a spare role of toilet paper with him in his brief case along with his chess set, just in case. I can't imagine being so desperate as to resort to using my phone".
The thing that amazes me about this story is that, when asked later why he did it, he said something to the effect of "Oh you know, i just had this crazy moment". Err, that maybe so, but looking at his rating progression, it's clear he had been up to this for literally years! Quite some crazy moment man, my sympathy's for you loss.
