    Interesting how it has gone more and more away from top flight chess credentials and more into other areas. [I imagine computer / research skills have become much more valuable.]

    Perhaps engines have something to do with this; all you need is a player strong enough to make sense of engine output. In other words, a person who would be a good 'correspondence chess centaur'.

    @BigDogg

    Agreed.

    Strong enough to understand the positions and willing to put in a lot of hours using an engine.

    But I have heard Magnus prefers people he gets along with so that could be the reason too 🤔

    Don’t blame Dubov
    The Russians attitude is Dubov betrayed them
    It's not about them it's about Dubov
    A big learning experience for him

    I noticed that as well, everyone of them 'cept Carlsen had a laptop infront of them.

    Looking at games of future opponents to see if they can spot a weakness or a positional preference. Also scanning other tournaments to see if a TN has been
    played that might contain the germ of a new idea.
    (however in this case most likely chatting with their facebook friends.)

    @ogb

    I imagine expenses are covered and maybe a bonus if your team wins.
    Plenty of people would do it for free so I can't imagine they have ridiculous fees.

    I would imagine that the seconds are paid because they'd be temporarily without their other means of earning a living.

    on another site, it's being said that Dubov made a mistake by helping Magnus. In the video here, he doesn't look very happy. It wasn't good for his career.

    Yes indeed. I would also add that though it's not necessary to surround one's self with super GM's (and their ego's) it's very helpful to have a group that can do their job well, but also works well in a team environment.
