Why loose rating points on a draw? Shouldnt both players retain the rating they were before the draw.

    This chart may help.
Basically, The number of rating points that are won or lost in a game are adjusted, based on the strength of the players, and that also applies to draws. In a draw, the lower rated player will gain some points and the higher rated player will lose some points.

Also, if the lower rated player wins the game they will get more points than what the higher rated player gets if they win. Hope that didn't confuse you. Maybe someone else can explain it better, or the chart might show what I mean. 🙂

So you can see in the chart that as long as the rating of the players are within 10 points of each other, a draw will leave the ratings unchanged. If there is more than a 10 point difference, a draw will result in points still being won and lost solely because of the rating difference of the players. It helps to keep the playing field level.
