How to add bold, italics, quotes etc in forums

Trawled through all FAQ’s but could not find the answer to this when posting in forums. Something to do with [ and ], but I forget…

In the FAQ, items 19 to 23 list a whole lot of things you can do wearing the appropriate pair of tags, which are [•] and [/•]
(dots are placeholders and are not part of any tag).
