This work got prioritised in an effort to solve another forum issue. It was part of another, larger, update initially, but patched in today separately.
So, the old smiley images are gone, replaced by the full suite of emojis instead. A few extra clickables emojis have been added when posting, but any variation can be cut and pasted into a post or typed on an emoji supporting device. (Mac Book Pro users - finally a use for your touchbar thing. 😉 )
The old smileys are swapped to emojis at render time, so old posts will work as before. So ": )" will become "🙂".
Messages on mobiles will now be sent with Emojis intact.
If the emoji usage becomes too irritating, they will be heavily restricted in the forums. (But not PMs/over the board chat)

We seem to have gone backwards here. I use keystroke emojis, so that means that most of my learned combinations render as empty boxes. The others are so small and pale that I can't figure out what is meant to represent what, unless I enlarge text to 8x normal size. So: ^ ^ clown wink ^ ^ scowl doubt ^ crying sad smile ^ blank surprise ^ ^ drunk is what I see here.
How do I find out what keystrokes to use for the ones I actually want? The old "reply"e" method no longer works.
