Game moves are archived off in to 'silos' in our database, by year, from the day the game was created. So long, long games can be a very minor annoyance!

So, from 2011, this game Game 8825816

Longest running game parameters: 21 day timeout, 28 day timebank, Black has used up his timebank, and queens are still on the board. I reckon it’ll all be over soon. Any year now.

The player Great King Rat hasn't moved in months.
    Timeouts should be automatic losses.

I'm thinking about going for the record 🤔
With proper moves under a time control and claiming a timeout if it arises.
I have 12 games going so I'll have to wait for an opening and find a player who has played for years with no timeouts.

    Anyone interested?

Hmmm by my rough math both players would have to use up the 21 days before each move.
Basically 6 weeks for each set of moves.
    8 or 9 moves a year 🤔

    It doesn't work.
That longest game must of had long periods of one player not moving with the other player not claiming a timeout.

Even if you go by the time control and use all of your time it would be 9 moves a year and to break the 8 year record would require a game to last into 70 plus moves which is rare unless done on purpose.

That "longest game" needs an asterisk beside it. Obviously it was only possible by not claiming timeouts.

    They are on move 47.
Definitely done by not claiming a timeout.

The time control is the agreed upon time limit.
If you violate that agreement you lose.
If we didn't follow those rules cowards like Bobby Fischer who ran away instead of playing would still be the champ.

On the one hand you are extolling the virtue of rules,
and on the other you say you want the rule changed!

    That does not make sense.

Additionally you have failed to give a reason why going
over the time control should be an automatic loss.

    I want the rule changed?
    No.
If you exceed the time limit it should be a loss and not at the discretion of your opponent.
