I've been to Santa Cruz in Bolivia, is it similar?
Bolivia is land-locked. Santa Cruz Calif has beaches and Steamer Lane (surfer boys and girls).

the university of cal. santa cruz mascot is the banana slug
    pretty cool
in the movie Pulp Fiction john travota wore a banana slug sweat shirt making it the best selling uni sweat shirt that year
The local uni had an intermural basketball team, mostly native American named The Fighting Whites in protest of sports teams using native American team names. A nearby town used Fighting Reds, now shortened to Reds.
The Fighting Whites T shirts were a big seller.
