My 14 year old granddaughter just asked me for the best song of the 70’s and the best song of the 80’s...I said

    70’s Blondie Heart of Glass
    80’s Journey Don’t Stop Believin’

Those were knee jerk responses and I could probably come up with better...

    Thoughts?

I will restrict myself to songs I lived and breathed in real-time and not great songs I discovered by back cataloguing or in retrospect:

    70s Heroes, David Bowie

80s Touch of Grey, Grateful Dead

    90s Secret World, Peter Gabriel

The song from the 70's that I feel had the most social significance was a little known song by Bob Dylan called "Hurricane ' .

Those are a couple of fine pop-songs. They're both very representative of their times.

As for me; trying to think of favorites from that era is an exercise in futility. There are just too many!

Delving back into the memories of knee-jerkers from the seventies brought up different memories.

Anyway my favourite songs of the 70s and 80s might include:

    - The Rain Song, by Led Zeppelin (Madison Square Garden 1973 version)

    - Hold Back The Rain, by Duran Duran

    - Rainy Days and Monday’s, by the Carpenters

    - Who’ll Stop The Rain, by Creedence Clearwater Revival

    Edit “Rain”theme is not coincidental.

Heart of Glass is one of my favourites (yum, Debbie Harry...), but better than Bohemian Rhapsody? Baba O'Riley? Up there, but not quite.

80s... loads of choice... Right now I'll choose 99 Luftballons (original version, of course!), but tomorrow I might think of another one.

As an aside, I move that threads like this be transplanted to breathe life back into the Culture Forum.

Probably much more famous than you give credit for.. Dylan held fundraisers for Ruben Carter and got him a re-trial , but he was convicted again...
