I go for Jeff Beck followed by Hendricks and Eric Clapton. Any thoughts? Jeff beck does not use a pick, and is a virtuoso of the whammy bar, a true rock and jazz virtuoso.

No doubt about your selections. All great indeed.
It's a hard comparison to make; between both style and era.

    I'd also submit as candidates:
    - Stevie Ray Vaughn
    - Jimmy Page &
    - Carlos Santana

    What about Robert Johnson?

    What about B.B. King?

Still, these folks are blues, not rock.

All this - on a headfull of drugs - in 1968. A beautiful charismatic man, a musical genius, only on the scene for a few years - then sadly gone.

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. I read that Hendrix could neither read nor write music. He is said to have envisioned the sounds he wished to create then experimented with them until he got the sound he wanted. That seems like genius to me.
