Are my cats millenials (in the bad sense)?

They have cleared the house and grounds of mice because it suits them. But they are too lazy or disinclined to do anything about the shrews.

Is one of your cats named "snowflake"?

Muhammad, Oliver, Olivia, Sophia, Harry, Jack, Amelia, Lily, George, Noah, Emily, Ava and - yes - Snowflake. It would seem that it's the glands of the shrews which are to blame.
