A variant of my own. The more modern line is Qb6.
  • 7. a4 cxd4 8. Bc1d2 dxc3 9. Bd2xc3 Bf8b4 10. Ng1e2 Ng8e7 11. O-O
White probably needed address e5 after the inevitable fall of the c3 bishop.
  • 11... Bb4xc3 12. Ne2xc3 a6 13. Bb5e2 Nc6xe5 14. h5 Ne7f5 15. f4 Qa5c5 16. Kg1h1 Nf5g3 17. Kh1h2 Ng3xf1 18. Qd1xf1 Ne5c4 19. Qf1f3 Qc5e3
Trade down and get out with the win. There was of course more material to be had if I wanted it, but with an uncastled king and a material advantage -- get to an ending quickly.
  • 20. h6 Qe3xf3 21. gxf3 Ra8c8
I want to encourage the trade down - and I want to keep whites pieces difficult to activate, hxg7 doesn't bother me as it opens up a file. I'd rather activate my king than worry about the light squared bishops activity, and I'd very much like to pin the rook on a1 if I can possibly do that (leaving the knight on c4 stops Nd2).
  • 22. hxg7 Rh8g8 23. f5 Rg8xg7 24. f6 Rg7g6
I'm not overly interested in Rxf6, because the white king is out of the game as long as I leave the Rook here. Now to limit the queenside.
  • 25. Nb1a3 Nc4xb2 26. Ra1c1 Nb2xa4 27. Na3b1
The pin on the knight is effective - and the d7 bishop doesn't need to go anywhere. I'd like to activate my king so I can march my passed d pawn. f6 needs to fall for that to happen.
  • 27... Rg6xf6 28. Kh2g3 Na4xc3 29. Nb1xc3 d4 30. Nc3a2 Rc8xc1 31. Na2xc1 e5
the d7 bishop becomes very active...without moving.
  • 32. Be2d3 h6 33. Nc1b3 Bd7c6 34. Bd3e4 Bc6xe4 35. fxe4 b6 36. Kg3g4 Ke8e7
I've taken away every meaningful square Its just about zugzwang. Anything white does makes things worse... massive material deficits will do that.
  • 37. Nb3d2 a5 38. Nd2c4 d3
If white leaves c4 the d pawn queens. If white allows me to play a4 and doesn't abandon c4, then the a pawn queens. and the white king cannot make a difference.
  • 39. Kg4h5 a4 40. Nc4xb6 Rf6xb6
truly this is unnecessary, but it gets the point across.
