Sacced bits and missed tricks

  • 1. e4
Before I made my first move, I looked at my opponent's profile, where I saw a statement saying how one of his favourite openings was the Smith-Morra Gambit
    • 1... c5
.....I happen to have a good record against this, so I was happy to oblige
      • 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3
This being the gambit, sacrificing a pawn in exchange for faster development and mobility
        • 3... dxc3 4. Nb1xc3 e6 5. Ng1f3 Nb8c6 6. Bf1c4 Bf8b4 7. Qd1b3 Ng8f6 8. e5 Nf6e4 9. O-O Bb4xc3
          This creates an isolated pawn
          • 10. bxc3 a6 11. Bc1e3 Qd8a5
Targeting c3 and e5... Fritz suggests that Qc2 (attacking the knight on e4) holds the position
            • 12. Ra1c1
? This move only drops another pawn however
              • 12... Nc6xe5 13. Nf3xe5 Qa5xe5 14. Be3d4 Qe5g5 15. Qb3c2 d5
I like moves like this, defends and attacks at the same time
                • 16. Bc4d3 f5 17. f4
This move looks bad for some reason... perhaps f2-f3 was better, keeping the Knight away, or maybe even c3-c4, attacking Black's centre
                  • 17... Qg5g6 18. Rf1f3 Ne4f6
? The Knight could have used e4 as a permanent post... should white play BxN, then Black would have a passed pawn
                    • 19. Rf3g3 Qg6f7 20. Bd4c5 Qf7c7 21. Qc2a4 b5 22. Qa4d4 Ke8f7 23. Bc5a3 Bc8b7 24. Rc1e1 Rh8e8 25. Rg3e3 Ra8d8
This rook is better on c8... an open file
