      Re-taking the pawn is dubious. 4 Qe2 Qe7 [if N-moves, then Nc6+ wins] 5 Qxe4 d6 6 d4 dxe5 7 dxe5 and black is again struggling to win back a pawn.

      3...d6! first and then 4...Nxe4 is fine. It avoids the Qe2-Nc6+ tricks.

    ?? Missing Nxf7..Qe7 would prevent the fork

      Qe7 prevents a fork, but allows white to just take the f7 pawn for free. Better is Be6, defending the f7 square.
