    Maybe it was better for black to 0-0-0 instead of threatening the g2 pawn.

      ! In fact, the queen being on g6 proves to be quite a burden.

        This leads to a Rook Gambit, but otherwise white was threatening Qxa6+, and then maybe pushing the a&b pawns. It would have been safer to just start pushing h7-h5, and after Qxa6+, Kg7, later intending ...Rd6. But still uncomfortable. The one thing that the Rook Gambit does seem to do here is offer the black king some peace.

          If the queen sticks around, threatening Rd8.

            ? I think here white should have double jumped one of the pawns, perhaps c5, opening up the c-file for the rook.

              This check still doesn't do much, and it's ignoring the lethal danger of black's h-pawn.
